Basic Guide to Essay Writing - Kathy
bcba coursework Indep. Ed. Evals (IEE) What is BCBA™ anyway? All too often those of us within a field make unintentional assumptions about what people know about the field. In the area of a essay, Behavior Analysis this is are essays written past tense, also true. Recently, I was discussing the issue of the BCBA™ credential with several very knowledgeable parents and how do a essay, advocates. It became very clear during the conversation that they all were under the misimpression that the BCBA™ credential is an Autism credential – which it is not. This realization is what has prompted my writing this article. So, what is the BCBA™ credential? BCBA stands for “Board Certified Behavior Analyst” and thesis, is a credential that began as a state certification in Florida in the 1990s and went national, and subsequently international, in 2000.
It is an attempt to provide some minimum standard for what constitutes being qualified to practice behavior analysis. There are currently, as of my chats with the Executive Director and how do you write a essay, President of the obama text Behavior Analysis Certification Board™ (BACB™) this weekend, approximately 4500 people certified by how do, the board. There are people who hold the BCBA™ credential working in over a dozen countries around the world and there are approved university courses springing up in places like Korea and persuasive on gay, Taiwan . The BCBA™ credential is fast becoming recognized – TriCare, the United State Military’s health insurance, and United Behavioral Healthcare pay for ABA services for children with Autism if they are delivered by a practitioner certified by the BACB™ and several states in the US have enacted reimbursement policies that reimburse at how do you write a essay a higher rate for BCBA™ delivered services than they do for those of in the past tense, licensed doctoral-level psychologists (e.g., Alabama). So, the issue of exactly what is the BCBA™ credential anyway is a essay, becoming more and more important a question. This article is my attempt to answer that question. It is important to address the issue of the are essays written past tense BCBA™ credential and how do you write, Autism because Autism and apostle paul, Autism Spectrum Disorders are so high profile and ABA is the best research supported treatment available for Autism. The question that I was asked recently was “Does simply having BCBA™ mean that the person is an expert on Autism?” The straightforward and unequivocal answer is you write, - No. A person can have never met a person with Autism, let alone received coursework, supervision, or training in serving people with ASDs, and still hold the BCBA™ credential.
Behavior Analysis is an approach to human behavior that is not defined by a single diagnostic issue like Autism. There are behavior analysts, who are really behavior analysts doing terrific work, who work in research from students prevention of violence at how do a essay the Centers for Disease Control, there are others that consult to Fortune 500 companies on employee motivation and productivity, and still others that train Human Service Animals. None of those BCBAs necessarily have any knowledge, training, or skill in from working with people with Autism and yet they may well hold the how do you write a essay BCBA™ credential based on their training and supervision in those other very important areas. If having the BCBA™ credential does not immediately make one an expert on Autism, what does? Because of this concern the Autism Group at the Association for for creating a good thesis, Behavior Analysis International have put out, starting in 1998 and updated periodically, a “Consumer Guidelines for Identifying, Selecting, and Evaluating Behavior Analysts Working with Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders”. In part the guidelines state: The Autism Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Association for Behavior Analysis asserts that all children and adults with autism and related disorders have the right to effective education and treatment based on the best available scientific evidence. You Write A Essay! Research has clearly documented the effectiveness of michelle text, applied behavior analysis ( ABA ) methods in how do you write a essay the education and treatment of people with autism (e.g., Matson et al., 1996; Smith, 1996; New York Department of Health, 1999; U.S.
Surgeon General, 1999). Planning, directing, and monitoring effective ABA programs for individuals with autism requires specific competencies. Individuals with autism, their families, and other consumers have the right to know whether persons who claim to be qualified to direct ABA programs actually have the formula for creating statement necessary competencies. All consumers also have the a essay right to hold those individuals accountable for providing quality services (e.g., to ask them to show how they use objective data to plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions they use). Because of the diversity of needs of individuals in the autism spectrum and the array of specific competencies amongst the pool of for creating a good, potential service providers, consumers also need to focus on the match between their needs and the specific competencies of a particular provider. What is the BCBA™ credential then anyway if it is not essentially an you write, Autism credential? To qualify to vernonia v. action papers from, sit for the BCBA™ examination a person must have a Masters degree in a human service field like Behavior Analysis, psychology, special education, etc.
They must also have specific coursework, essentially 6 courses, at the graduate level in Behavior Analysis. In addition they must have supervised experience under someone who holds the BCBA™ or who is approved by the board in how do you write a essay the application of behavior analysis over a brief period, as little as 9 months time. Finally, they must have their application approved by review of the board and take and pass the standardized examination. What this means is are essays written past, that the how do you write a essay person has established a minimum set of both academic and applied skills as attested to by their training, supervision, and michelle thesis, passage of the BACB™ examination. I don't presume to you write, represent the board or speak for them in any way so for more information on this topic, and to get the most current and accurate answer possible, visit the Board's website. Another question that consumers have asked frequently is “Does it make any difference if the behavior analyst we want to hire has a PhD or other doctorate or a Masters degree?” The BCBA™ credential requires graduate coursework that is essentially the equivalent of 6 courses and a Masters degree (not necessarily in ABA ). So, the easy answer is that from the standpoint of implementation and consultation the marriage PhD or doctorate is not required nor does having one make the BCBA™ more qualified. Like everything else there are minimums necessary to become qualified and there are those with greater skills. How Do A Essay! One of the essay best BCBAs I have ever had the pleasure of working with “only has a masters” – I say only because that is how it has been referred to a essay, by several people but that is an unnecessary implicit slight on those talented people with masters degrees. Other BCBAs I have known with doctorates had their doctorate in michelle thesis text an area completely unrelated to how do a essay, behavior analysis. Some have asked: “ But Dr. Montgomery you have a PhD and are a BCBA™?” Yes, I do have both but then my PhD is in Clinical Psychology and the doctorate is required for licensure as a psychologist in Georgia and most other states in the US . My doctoral work was both clinical and behavioral because of who my mentors were and their behavioral orientation.
Having all the training to be both a licensed psychologist and michelle obama thesis text, a BCBA™ gives me an how do you write, interesting perspective on research papers, what it takes to obtain each and what each brings to my skill sets in helping others. There is no requirement that a BCBA have any meaningful training on biological factors in behavior, there is such a requirement for licensed psychologists. There is no requirement that the BCBA have any training on how do you write, diagnosis, nor does the credential give its holder any legal status in making diagnoses, but the license in psychology requires such training and being licensed does authorize the psychologist to in fact diagnose within the mental health range of vernonia papers from, diagnoses. How Do You Write! On the other hand, being a licensed psychologist does not mean that the michelle obama thesis person has ever had any coursework or supervision in ABA or Behavior Analysis at all. Very few licensed psychologists are in fact qualified by training or experience to develop, supervise, or implement an ABA program. So, each credential has different skills and training associated with it and there is a strange lack of overlap between the two. So, what does having a doctorate (a PhD, PsyD, of EdD) mean when someone is BCBA™? Other than potentially qualifying them for how do you write a essay, licensure in another field like psychology or a teaching position at a university – very little. Written In The Past Tense! In this case the BACB™ board has determined that the practitioner degree is the Masters degree. There is how do you write, no requirement for a doctorate to practice ABA and written tense, most applied coursework occurs at the masters-level within ABA programs. Doctoral-level coursework is often management, research, teaching, and specialty coursework that may relate to ABA but may not depending on the university and major professor that the person worked with during their career as a student.
There are, of course, incentives to holding a doctorate, for example public schools routinely pay staff based on degree – whether or not holding that degree actually is how do you write, relevant to the work that they are doing in many cases. If you are interested in finding out if someone is an expert on Autism, you will need to are essays written tense, look beyond merely finding out if they hold the BCBA credential. The “Consumer Guidelines for Identifying, Selecting, and Evaluating Behavior Analysts Working with Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders” developed by the Autism Group of the you write a essay Association for Behavior Analysis International lays out in thesis mouse and man some detail those skills and experiences that they recommend consumers ask any potential Autism expert about to determine if they are indeed knowledgeable and trained in a essay effective treatments of language and apostle paul essay, social deficits found in ASDs using applied behavior analysis techniques. Picturing the Personal Essay: A Visual Guide. A design professor from Denmark once drew for me a picture of the creative process, which had been the you write subject of his doctoral dissertation. “Here,” he said. “This is what it looks like”: Aha, I thought, as we discussed parallels in the writing process. Persuasive On Gay Marriage? Although I may start an essay with a notion of where I am headed, inevitably I veer away as I get new ideas or encounter dead ends. Sometimes I even seem to go backward, losing all direction. Nothing is wasted though, said the design professor, because every bend in the process is helping you to how do you write arrive at your necessary structure. By trying a different angle or creating a composite of thesis for of, past approaches, you get closer and closer to what you intend.
You begin to a essay delineate the vernonia research papers organic form that will match your content. The remarkable thing about personal essays, which openly mimic this exploratory process, is a essay that they can be so quirky in their “shape.” No diagram matches the statement mouse and man exact form that evolves, and that is because the best essayists resist predictable approaches. How Do You Write A Essay? They refuse to limit themselves to generic forms, which, like mannequins, can be tricked out in personal clothing. Nevertheless, recognizing a few basic underlying structures may help an essay writer invent a more personal, more unique form. V. Action Papers? Here, then, are several main options. Narrative is the natural starting place since narrative is a natural structure for telling others about you write, personal events.
We instinctively turn to chronology as a way to statement for of mouse and man recreate the past, putting our lives into a neat moment-by-moment order. A Essay? Beware, though. The march of time can be methodical—first this, then this, then this. If unrelieved, it becomes the persuasive marriage uk ticking clock in the jail or, worse, the flat line of you write, death. Are Essays In The Past Tense? Savvy essayists, as a result, twist their chronology, beginning at how do you write, the end or breaking to obama a moment in the past, even weaving together several timelines. How Do? More crucial, though, is their use of tension, which changes the flat line of chronology into a rising line—a plot. Such tension forces the reader into a climb, muscles contracting. It raises anticipation. Will we reach the top? And what will we see from there?
Take, for example, Jo Ann Beard’s essay “The Fourth State of v. action papers from students, Matter.” The narrator, abandoned by her husband, is caring for a dying dog and going to work at a university office to which an angry graduate student has brought a gun. The sequence of scenes matches roughly the unfolding of real events, but there is suspense to you write a essay pull us along, represented by questions we want answered. Formula A Good Thesis Statement? In fact, within Beard’s narrative, two sets of questions, correlating to parallel subplots, create a kind of double tension. When the setting is Beard’s house, we wonder, “Will she find a way to let go of the how do a essay dying dog, not to mention her failing marriage?” And when she’s at work, we find ourselves asking, “What about the guy with the gun? How will he impact her one ‘safe place’?” Narrative essays keep us engaged because we want answers to such questions. The tension begs for resolution. We keep on reading unless the vernonia papers from writer stops stair-stepping upward toward the critical moment when change becomes necessary.
If she flatlines on an emotional plateau, not raising the tension, then we are likely to lose interest and walk away. “Readers do not want to put their foot on the same step twice” is the way veteran essayist Bill Kittredge put it while swapping ideas at a writing conference. You Write A Essay? He had learned this principle from screenwriters in apostle paul essay Hollywood and insisted, “Think what you want, those guys know how plots work.” One interesting side note: trauma, which is a common source for personal essays, can easily cause an author to get stuck on the sort of plateau Kittredge described. Jo Ann Beard, while clearly wrestling with the immobilizing impact of her own trauma, found a way to keep the you write reader moving both forward and upward, until the rising tension reached its inevitable climax: the graduate student firing his gun. I have seen less-experienced writers who, by contrast, seem almost to paul essay jog in place emotionally, clutching at how do, a kind of post-traumatic scar tissue. Let’s set aside narrative, though, since it is not the only mode for a personal essay.
In fact, most essays are more topical or reflective, which means they don’t move through time in a linear fashion as short stories do. Phillip Lopate describes how reflective essayists tend to circle a subject, “wheeling and diving like a hawk.” Unlike academic scholars, they don’t begin with a thesis and aim, arrow-like, at a pre-determined bull’s-eye. Instead, they meander around their subject until arriving, often to the side of what was expected. One of the benefits of such a circling approach is that it seems more organic, just like the mind’s creative process. It also allows for a wider variety of are essays written tense, perspectives—illuminating the you write subject from multiple angles. Vernonia Research Papers From? A classic example would be “Under the Influence,” Scott Russell Sanders’s essay about his alcoholic father.
Instead of luring us up the chronological slope of plot, Sanders spirals around his father’s drinking, leading us to how do a wide range of realizations about alcoholism: how it gets portrayed in films, how it compares to demon-possession in persuasive on gay the Bible, how it results in how do a essay violence in other families, how it raises the author’s need for control, and even how it influences the next generation through his workaholic over-compensation. We don’t read an essay like this out of plot-driven suspense so much as for the pleasure of being surprised, again and again, by new perspective and new insight. The formal limits of formula, focus. My own theory is that most personal essayists, because of a natural ability to how do a essay extrapolate, do not struggle to paul find subjects to write about. How Do A Essay? Writer’s block is not their problem since their minds overflow with remembered experiences and related ideas. While a fiction writer may need to invent from scratch, adding and adding, the michelle thesis text essayist usually needs to do the opposite, deleting and deleting. As a result, nonfiction creativity is how do best demonstrated by what has been left out. The essay is a figure locked in a too-large-lump of personal experience, and the good essayist chisels away all unnecessary material. One helpful way to understand this principle of deletion is to think of the essayist looking through a viewfinder to limit the reader’s focus. The act of from, framing a selected portion of raw experience from the chronological mess we call “life” fundamentally limits the reader’s attention to a manageable time and place, excluding all events that are not integrally related.
What appears in the written “picture,” like any good painting, has wholeness because the essayist was disciplined enough to remove everything else. Virginia Woolf’s “Street Haunting” is an odd but useful model. She limits that essay to a single evening walk in London, ostensibly taken to buy a pencil. I suspect Woolf gave herself permission to combine incidents from you write several walks in apostle paul London, but no matter. The essay feels “brought together” by how do the imposed limits of time and place. As it happens, “Street Haunting” is also an vernonia v. action from interesting prototype for a kind of essay quite popular today: the segmented essay. Although the a essay work is unified by the frame of a single evening stroll, it can also be seen as a combination of many individual framed moments.
If we remove the purpose of the persuasive marriage journey—to find a pencil—the essay falls neatly into a set of discrete scenes with related reveries: a daydreaming lady witnessed through a window, a dwarfish woman trying on shoes, an imagined gathering of how do you write a essay, royalty on the other side of a palace wall, and eventually the arguing of a married couple in the shop where Woolf finally gets her pencil. Today, many essayists are comfortable simply letting go of the overarching story line (such as Woolf’s journey to buy a pencil) so they can organize disparate scenes in statement mouse and man a more segmented fashion, separated by bits of white space. All that remains to unify the parts is an almost imperceptible thread of theme, not narrative. Will Baker, for instance, relies on how do nothing but a title—“My Children Explain the Big Issues”—and four section headings: “Feminism,” “Fate,” “Existentialism,” and “East and West.” Each of his framed vignettes is about a remembered moment with one of his kids. These moments have a broad similarity as a result; however, without their attached labels, we would not be able to connect the parts in a fully satisfying manner. The titles allow us to string together a kind of thematic necklace. Our attention to thematic unity brings up one more important dynamic in most personal essays. Not only michelle obama thesis text do we have a horizontal movement through time, but there is how do you write a essay also a vertical descent into meaning. As a result, essayists will often pause the forward motion to dip into a thematic well. Sometimes these vertical descents seem quite expository, which is not necessarily bad. Persuasive Essay Marriage Uk? Contrary to the high school teacher’s oft-repeated maxim—“Show, don’t tell!”—the essayist is free both to show and tell.
In fact, I once heard the nonfiction writer Adam Hochschild scold a group of MFA students for being so subtle in their writing that they left out critical signposts that readers needed. “Don’t be so afraid to say what you mean,” he counseled. Wendell Berry’s essay “An Entrance to the Woods” demonstrates the potential for how do you write a essay, such expository descents. In the middle of a quiet description of an are essays written in the overnight camping trip, Berry notices the distant roar of cars on a essay a highway, and vernonia v. action papers, the “out-of-place” sound leads him on a long tangent. He describes how the “great ocean of silence” has been replaced by an ocean of engine noise, in which silence occurs only sporadically and at wide intervals. He imagines the “machine of human history—a huge flywheel building speed until finally the force of its whirling will break it in pieces, and the world with it.” And the reader realizes that what appeared to be an odd tangent is actually an essential descent into the well of meaning. The essay is not about camping at all, but about the fragile nature of nature. In fact, Berry uses several of these loops of reflective commentary, and though they seem to be digressions, temporarily pulling the reader away from the forward flow of the plot, they develop an essential second layer to you write a essay the essay. Braided and layered structures. So far we have looked at narrative, reflective, and formula for creating statement, segmented essays, but we have not exhausted our structural possibilities. Far from it. Many essays, for instance, are braided, weaving together two or more strands of story line in an interactive fashion.
Judith Ortiz Cofer, in her personal meditation “Silent Dancing,” creates a particularly revelatory braid from two strands: a home movie juxtaposed against her own memories of childhood as a Puerto Rican in New Jersey. You Write A Essay? To help the reader with transitions, she brackets the a good statement home movie with white space, putting the text into italics. We look at the italicized home movie for how do a essay, a while, then her memories, then the movie, and so on, letting one strand surface while the other is momentarily submerged. Today, an even more fashionable form is the “lyric essay,” which is not easily categorized since it may depend on braiding or segmenting to accomplish its overall effect. Formula For Creating A Good? However, like the a essay lyric poem, the lyric essay is devoted more to image than idea, more to persuasive on gay uk mood than concept. It is there to be experienced, not simply thought about. And like many poems, it accomplishes this effect by layering images without regard to narrative order. How Do You Write? A lyric essay is essay on gay marriage a series of waves on the shore, cresting one after the other.
It is one impression after another, unified by tone. And it seems to move in you write its own peculiar direction, neither vertical nor horizontal. More slant. Want an example? Look at marriage, Judith Kitchen’s three-page essay “Culloden,” which manages to leap back and how do you write, forth quite rapidly, from a rain-pelted moor in 18th-century Scotland to are essays written 19th-century farms in America to the blasted ruins of a essay, Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, the thesis mouse author’s birthday. The sentences themselves suggest the impressionistic effect that Kitchen is how do a essay after, being compressed to fragments, rid of the excess verbiage we expect in on gay marriage formal discourse: “Late afternoon. The sky hunkers down, presses, like a lover, against the land. Small sounds.
A far sheep, faint barking. . . How Do A Essay? .” And as the images accumulate, layer upon layer, we begin to feel the author’s fundamental mood, a painful awareness of her own inescapable mortality. We begin to encounter the piece on a visceral level that is more intuitive than rational. Like a poem, in prose. Regardless of form, all essays must end, which raises a final worthwhile question: how to bring closure? First of all, endings are related to beginnings. That’s why many essays seem to are essays written in the circle back to where they began.
Annie Dillard, in her widely anthologized piece “Living Like Weasels,” opens with a dried-out weasel skull that is attached, like a pendant, to the throat of a living eagle—macabre proof that the weasel was carried aloft to die and a essay, be torn apart. Then, at the end of the essay, Dillard alludes to the skull again, stating, “I think it would be well, and persuasive on gay uk, proper, and obedient, and pure, to grasp your one necessity and not let it go, to dangle from it limp wherever it takes you.” Of course, the effect of how do you write a essay, returning to her initial image, transforming it into a symbol, is a sense of completion. For Creating A Good Thesis? For Dillard’s weasel-skull conclusion to feel truly satisfying, however, it must mimic life, which is never completely complete. How Do You Write A Essay? In real life, there is always an “and then,” even if it comes after we have died. So the best conclusions open up a bit at students, the end, suggesting the presence of the future. See how deftly Dillard accomplishes this effect simply by positing one last imagined or theoretical possibility—a way of you write a essay, life she hopes to master, that we ourselves might master: “Seize it and formula a good thesis, let it seize you up aloft even, till your eyes burn out and drop; let your musky flesh fall off in shreds, and let your very bones unhinge and scatter, loosened over fields, over fields and woods, lightly, thoughtless, from any height at all, from as high as eagles.” Yes, the essay has come full circle, echoing the opening image of the you write a essay weasel’s skull, but it also points away, beyond itself, to something yet to michelle obama be realized. The ending both closes and opens at a essay, the same time. All diagrams rendered by Claire Bascom.
